UX Design for Girl Scouts of USA
Girl Scouts of USA (GSUSA) is a nonprofit organization focused on empowering girls through leadership development, community service, and outdoor activities. It offers programs that help girls build confidence, develop skills, and become active members of their communities.
In my role, I lead design strategy and product roadmaps for digital platforms that facilitate the sale of millions of cookie boxes each year. This includes crafting user-centered interfaces that engage over 1 million users, collaborating with senior leadership to align on goals, and driving cross-functional initiatives to enhance our digital experience.
Key platforms I contributed to:
-
Digital Cookie (cookie sales management)
-
Digital Cookie mobile app
-
MyGS (membership management)
-
Volunteer Toolkit
Task 1: Design Strategy
As the lead UX designer, I spearheaded product roadmaps in collaboration with leadership and business partners, balancing technical capabilities with user needs. A highlight of my work was contributing to the redesign of GSUSA’s digital architecture by introducing a new Material UI component library, improving both usability and development efficiency.
Task 2: User-centered Designs
Using Figma, I developed intuitive, user-centered designs for a diverse audience, including girl members, parent volunteers, and troop leaders. By integrating qualitative insights from user interviews and quantitative data, I delivered solutions that addressed their needs and pain points.
For instance, during the 2025 Cookie Season, my team collected over 37,000 pieces of user feedback, with an average rating of 3.6/5 from adult volunteers and 4.2/5 from parents. We also saw 298,580 active users and over 1.3 million unique login sessions in just one week. These insights were analyzed and translated into actionable design improvements for the next Cookie Season.
Task 3: Design System & Culture
I led the adoption of the Material UI component library, streamlining workflows for engineering and product teams.
As a passionate advocate for accessibility and user experience, I worked to foster a UX-centric culture within the organization, making sure that user-first principles were embedded in every project.
Task 4: Cross-Functional Team Collaboration
Collaboration was key to my role. I worked closely with GSUSA’s Senior Vice President of Customer Applications and Senior Director of Product to shape the overall direction of digital products. I regularly partnered with product owners, project managers, engineers, and marketing teams, providing design mockups and UX guidelines for alignment and quality.
Additionally, I oversaw design projects executed by external vendors, upholding consistency with GSUSA’s brand and design standards.
